What is White Willow bark?
Willow bark usage has dated back to 400bc and has been mainly associated with treatment of pain (mostly back pain and osteoarthritis), headaches and other inflammatory related diseases such as bursitis and tendinitis. The healing properties of the White Willow stems from its high content in Salicin, a chemical similar to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) present in the bark. In combination with the herb's powerful anti-inflammatory properties, some studies show willow is as effective as aspirin for reducing pain and inflammation (but not fever), and at a much lower dose. Scientists think that may be due to other compounds in the herb. More research is needed. plant compounds (called flavonoids), Salicin is thought to be responsible for the pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects of the herb. In fact, in the 1800s, Salicin was used to develop aspirin. White willow appears to bring pain relief more slowly than aspirin, but its effects may last longer. The White willow bark is also packed with polyphenols and flavonoids, these antioxidants are very effective in protecting cells from damage due to free-radicals. White willow use also display fever-reducing effects, antiseptic effects and immune boosting properties.
